Quick Start Tutorial

Text Transcript

Hello! Welcome to the quick start tutorial to Mask Equalizer, a Photoshop Plugin to create layer masks from luminosity ranges.

Look the layer window.
The layer is were the pixels of an image are.
The layer mask is a sort of extension used to reveal or hidden a part of the image.
The mask enlarged.
As you can see black hidden, white reveals, intermediate grays blends or if you prefer hidden partially.
Again: black hidden, white reveals,  black hidden, white reveals.

Let’s open the panel from the Photoshop/Window/Extensions/Mask Equalizer menu.
The panel can be extended to reveal advanced options.
This four small buttons recall the most common luminosity masks.
Shadows
Midtones
Highlights
Shadows and Highlights, probably the most used one.
Of course this presets are a starting point and can be tweaked.

We are now in Mask preview mode and we can see the mask as a grayscale image. Switching to comp mode we can see the preview of the image with mask applied applied.
The ability to switch in real time from Mask to Comp mode is the core feature of Mask Equalizer as it allows the complete control over the creation of a perfect mask.

Other options are
Contrast, to modify the contrast of the mask
Feathering, very important, to smooth the mask and avoid posterization.
Density, to reduce the opacity of the mask

Use this menu if you want to use Red, Green, Blue or Saturation channel, instead of Luminosity.

Last we have the ON/OFF button, the Version Release info, reset that reset the sliders to zero.

You will use this apply button only to apply the last custom preset to another image

Masked Equalizer is a plugin and as ANY plugin works only on Pixel Layers. What’s about if you need to create a mask on an advanced object, adjustment layer or group?
For instance here I added an adjustment layer but I want to lighten only the midtones so I must have the midtones white and hidden the rest.
Mask Equalizer will alert you, create a pixel layer on the top and deactivate the non-pixel layer. Once finished, drag the mask on the adjustment layer, activate it and trash the temporary layer.
Easy!

Oh! I forgot! This last small Home button links to the Mask Equalizer page.

Is MASK Equalizer a duplicate of Channels Power Tool?

Absolutely not. They are totally different.

CPT creates masks from channels and is designed specifically for post-producers. It also greatly speed-up the professional workflow.
MASK Equalizer creates masks using multiple tonal ranges which are the different luminosity areas of an image. It’s designed for photographers to easily improve the files and fix the most common issues in a standard photographic workflow.

A Modular App. From Easy to Advanced

MASK Equalizer Panel in full mode

Easy presets section. Use one out the four buttons to create the most common masks to protect highlights, shadows, midtones and (the most frequent) shadows and highlights together. When pressing the buttons the sliders will set accordingly. Check the preview and proceed or tweak them manually for an easy to apply solution.

Intermediate sections. Tonal range (luminosity) sliders. They refers to blacks, shadows, shadows/midtones, midtones, midtones/highlights, highlights and whites. Starting from the presets, or from scratch you will able to easily and quickly create even the most complex mask.

The sliders in this third section allow to change the opacity of the mask, feather it or tweak its contrast while keeping the midtones unchanged. The use of these options, usually complicated, is made easy by the live preview which will allow you to work perceptively.

Fourth section. It contains the priceless wonder-option of the double live preview. You can opt to preview the black & white mask or just the image with the mask already applied .
This section also contains the advanced users menu to use specific channels as for instance l,a, b, hue, saturation, etc. instead of the default luminosity channel.
